The 2nd Annual Fostering Global Citizenship in Higher Education Conference was held in Burlington, Vermont on November 10th and 11th, 2008.

The Conference was sponsored by:
- UVM's Community-University Partnerships & Service Learning Office
- Vermont Campus Compact

and co-sponsored by:
- Middlebury College
- World Learning/SIT
- The Davis Foundation

The Goals of the Conference were to:

  1. Establish a working definition of global citizenship for each campus
  2. Identify the competencies that an individual should possess to be considered a global citizen
  3. Share and discuss effective approaches for teaching, developing, and preparing global citizens
  4. Develop strategies for cross-departmental collaboration
  5. Design or revise individual syllabi/learning plans related to global citizenship

During the first day of the conference, attendees from 44 campuses and institutions across North America engaged in workshops, networking, and facilitated discussions within their campus groups. Carol Bellamy, President of World Learning /SIT gave the Keynote Address, "Shaping the Future: The Need for Global Citizens". Adam Weinberg, Executive Vice President, World Learning and Provost, SIT facilitated a working session on "Defining a Global Citizen for your Campus." Workshops were presented by Vermont and national presenters on topics ranging from constructing effective and ethical partnerships to using technology to promote global citizenship.

The second day of the conference featured two expanded curriculum development institutes open to faculty and staff who were engaged in designing, or supporting the design of, curriculum with a global focus. These sessions were interactive and engaging, and allowed participants time to hone in on their own ideas through workshop time and consultation with peers.
