2010-2011 Americorps Positions: CASC Positions

Vermont Campus Compact will have 5 College Access & Success Corps (CASC) positions during the 2010-2011 year (Funding Pending). Specific information about each position is available below:

Site of Service: University of Vermont
Description of Service:

The University of Vermont's Upward Bound Program and Student Support Services Program work with students at the high school and college levels preparing students for college access and assisting students to succeed through college. The AmeriCorps CASC member will develop and implement a mentoring program that bridges high school and college students. The mentoring program would be employed in an effort to increase the college aspirations, retention rates and school success among students enrolled in the targeted high school. The CASC member will implement programming that addresses some of the reasons why students are currently resistant to attending college: financial literacy education, course selection leading to college readiness, and lack of familiarity with the college environment.

Site of Service: Southern Vermont College
Description of Service:
The AmeriCorps Member at Southern Vermont College will work with administrators, faculty, students, and community agencies in the following areas: (1) Supporting the first-year experience “Quest for Success” (QFS) and a cross-campus “Course Apprentice Program.”  Specifically, the Member will support the development and implementation of service-learning projects.  S/he will also develop a peer-support program wherein exemplary upper-class students work closely with QFS students.  (2) Aligning student interests with volunteer opportunities at small and faith-based community agencies to service anti-poverty initiatives in the surrounding region.

*The Member must be willing to be “on-call” in the residential areas approximately 4 weeks out of a semester/training will be provided.

Site of Service: Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (2 positions)
Description of Service:
Two Americorps members will promote college access within communities in Vermont to inspire all students, but particularly low-income, first generation, and at risk students, to plan for and have the skills necessary to be successful in college. English Language Learners (ELL) are an important part of the target group. The Americorps members will assist Career and Education Outreach staff by serving as an information resource to students and their families through presentations, workshops, and other community outreach. They will have an integral role in compiling information of use to the students and families we serve.
