AmeriCorps 2010-2011 Programs Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What types of AmeriCorps (AC) Positions will be available
next year?
A: Next year we will have AC VISTA positions as we have had
in years past, that bring higher education resources to bear to
address poverty. While that program faces cutbacks, we are hopeful
that we will be able to offer two other types of full-time (FT)
Corps positions, one on Access & Success (A&S) and the other
on Sustainable Environment Entrepreneurs (SEE). These two Corps
will be AC National Direct. In addition to those three types of
FT service, VCC is interested in continuing to offer part-time (PT)
AC positions to current college students, the SERVE program.
Q: What types of activities could a FT member do?
A: Strong VISTA proposals will have a very direct connection
between capacity building at Higher Ed Institutions and anti-poverty
related work. Strong National Direct proposals will focus on access
and success or sustainability and problem solving both on campuses
and in the surrounding communities. See program overviews for more
detailed descriptions for each the Access and Success and the Sustainable
Environment Entrepreneurs programs.
Strong proposals for any type of position will include volunteer
recruitment and opportunities AC member development in addition
to clear community outcomes. Specific National Direct examples can
be found in the overviews of the two respective programs.
Q: How many members will each Corps have?
A: In 2010-2011 VCC will have 7-8 FT AC VISTA members (6
fewer slots than in 09-10). We estimate we will have 10 FT A&S*
and 15 FT SEE*. We are actively looking for feedback on how many
members sites would be interested in hosting to help solidify these
numbers.
Q: How many FT members can one institution apply for?
A: There is no limit on how many FT members a campus, institution
or organization can apply for. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate
organizational capacity to support ALL types of AC members, be they
FT or PT. One institution may apply for multiple members in the
same program, or across the VCC program offerings.
Q: What are the differences between AC VISTA and AC National
Direct?
A: Please see the chart below:

Q: What are the important dates and deadlines I need to know
about?
A: A request for proposals (RFP) for the FT positions will
be released in December or January, and be due at the end of February
or March. One RFP will contain information on the three different
types of FT positions (VISTA, A&S, and SEE). A RFP for PT positions
will be released at the beginning of April with a mid-May deadline*.
Q: Why are the FT proposals due so early before VCC funding
is guaranteed?
A: In order to have enough time to award slots to sites,
and have members recruited to start in September*, the proposals
must be submitted before funding is secured. As with all grant applications,
submission of a proposal does not guarantee funding.
Q: What is the cost associated with being a Host Site for FT
or PT positions?
A: FT positions will have a starting cost-share of $5,000.
PT positions have no cost-share tied to them and are reserved for
current college students. Applicants should consider additional
costs associated with hosting AC Programs including staff time/support,
space, and additional support (food or housing) that may be provided
to members.
Q: What if my office or department can't afford a FT cost-share?
A: Applicants are also strongly encouraged to consider the
return on a $5,000 investment for a FT member. In addition proposals
may be submitted as a collaboration between departments/offices,
or as a collaboration between a campus and a community partner.
Applicants should indicate a primary supervisor at one of the two
sites and the intentional design of the position.
Q: Does my campus or organization have to be a member of VCC
to submit a proposal/host a member?
A: VCC will welcome proposals for either FT A&S or FT
SEE members from any campus or organization in VT who submits a
proposal relevant to the respective themes of the corps. Non-profit
organizations are strongly encouraged to consider tying the position
to higher education. VISTA and the PT slots for college students
will continue to be offered to member campuses only.
Q: Are all of these programs guaranteed to run next year?
A: No. We have been approved only for the VISTA program,
which will run with 7-8 members. All other programs (FT and PT)
are pending funding. VCC will receive notification about funding
for the other programs in June.
Q: Who can I contact to get more information about these Corps?
A: Please review the overviews for both A&S and SEE National
Direct programs. For more information, please contact Laura Rooney
at laurar@middlebury.edu and 802-443-2511 or Amy McGlashan at agibansm@middlebury.edu
