2010-2011 Americorps Positions: SEE Positions

Vermont Campus Compact will have15-20 Sustainable Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE) positions during the 2010-2011 year (Funding Pending). Specific information about each position is available below:

Site of Service: Bennington College
Member Title or Area of Focus: Energy & Weatherization
Description of Service:

The Sustainable Environment Entrepreneur AmeriCorps Member at Bennington College will have a dynamic three part role in improving environmental sustainability and literacy. The first part is to support the College's effort to account for all greenhouse gas emissions producing activities. The member will administer a campus-wide survey on transportation and commuting and compile the data. The second part is to develop travel-related emissions strategies by working with campus groups as well as local and state organizations to develop long-term mass transportation alternatives. The third part is to coordinate a group of Bennington College students to develop energy and climate change curriculum modules and teach them at Mt. Anthony Union High School.

Member Title or Area of Focus: Local Food Member-Beginning Farmer Program
Description of Service:

The Local Food SEE Corps position at the Center for Sustainable Agriculture is an exciting opportunity to get involved with education, outreach, and coordination in program areas related to food, farming, environment, and leadership. The Member that fills this position will be deeply involved in programming related to increasing food availability through helping beginning farmers overcome barriers to farming, working directly with food system research, and fostering strong community relationships between the Center and our many community and University partners. Applicants with an interest in food systems, outreach, education, and research are encouraged to apply.

Member Title or Area of Focus: Local Food Member-Pasture Program
Description of Service:

The Local Food SEE Corps position at the Center for Sustainable Agriculture is an exciting opportunity to get involved with education, outreach, and coordination in program areas related to food, farming, environment, and leadership. The Member that fills this position will be deeply involved in programming related to increasing food access for food insecure individuals and families, increasing farm viability through promotion of sustainable grazing practices, expanding the market for local farmers, and fostering strong community relationships between the Center and our many community and University partners. Applicants with an interest in food systems, outreach, education, and research are encouraged to apply.

Site of Service: Champlain College
Member Title or Area of Focus: Waste Reduction Coordinator
Description of Service:

The Waste Reduction Coordinator position at Champlain College will work with various campus entities, such as the Sustainability Coordinator, Sustain Champlain committee, Physical Plant staff, and Environmental Club students to actively promote solid waste reduction through reduce and reuse initiatives as well as maintaining and expanding current recycling and composting programs. The position will include a mixture of education and outreach tasks, data collection and analysis, and will support and expand necessary infrastructure through assisting with set-up and collection coordination.

Site of Service: Common Roots
Member Title or Area of Focus: Farm-to-School
Description of Service:

Common Roots, a non-profit dedicated to bringing local food initiatives to the community and school district of South Burlington, is seeking a Farm-to-School Coordinator. The Farm-to-School Coordinator will be responsible for increasing the amount of local food served, and the establishment of farm-to-school lunches in the three South Burlington elementary schools. S/he shall work with local farmers and with the district's food service to source local food options and to support the development and taste testing of new recipes. Additionally, this position involves supporting interns and involving students, teachers, and families wherever possible. The position requires the development of mini-lessons on nutrition and the environment, including carbon neutrality. The Farm-to-School Coordinator will be responsible for publicizing this effort online and at community and school events.

Member Title or Area of Focus: Hoop House Manager
Description of Service:

Common Roots, a non-profit dedicated to bringing local food initiatives to the community and school district of South Burlington, is seeking a Hoop House Manager. This person will be responsible for the production of greens for the three South Burlington elementary schools in a hoop house (greenhouse structure heated only by passive solar power) to be located at Bread and Butter Farms in South Burlington. This position involves supporting interns and involving students, teachers, and families wherever possible. The position requires the development of mini-lessons on nutrition and the environment, including carbon neutrality. The Farm-to-School Coordinator will be responsible for publicizing this effort online and at community and school events.

Member Title or Area of Focus: Campus-Community Sustainable Environment Entrepreneur
Description of Service:

The Campus-Community Sustainable Environment Entrepreneur (CCSEE) will work closely with the newly created programs at Green Mountain College (GMC) in Sustainable Design and Energy and Office of Campus Sustainability. The CCSEE will work to integrate sustainability practices being taught in the classroom to projects that enhance the social, economic, and environmental systems in the Poultney region. Specific examples include: develop social entrepreneurial skills through workshops and training and apply these skills to ecological design and sustainable energy problems in the Poultney community; organize volunteers to contribute to GMC's on-going weatherization initiative, including training students and community members to conduct home energy visits; and assist community members with the paperwork and scheduling of contractors necessary for more substantial energy efficiency improvements.

Site of Service: HOPE (Helping Overcome Poverty's Effects) & Middlebury College
Member Title or Area of Focus: Community Food Security Coordinator
Description of Service:

The Community Food Security Coordinator will work to implement a successful model of farm viability and food security in Addison County. The Coordinator will partner with existing institutions and organizations in the county that are working on food justice initiatives, as well as forming new alliances that will strengthen the local food economy. S/he will work directly to build a local foods collaboration network that supports small farmers and increases access to local foods for low income families. The coordinator will be responsible for educating students and residents on issues surrounding the production, distribution, and consumption of local foods. He or she will envision and construct a replicable working model of community food security for towns and counties across Vermont.

Member Title or Area of Focus: Community Connections Coordinator
Description of Service:

As the Community Connections Coordinator the SEE member will be the hub for all the Intervale Center's (IC) volunteer and internship opportunities. With our partner organizations s/he will be responsible for managing the Abenaki Traditional Garden, the Intervale Gleaning Project, and all other volunteer and educational opportunities at the IC. The SEE member will also be responsible for planning and implementing the summer series "Thursdays at the Intervale," and for seeking sponsorship and funding for these activities. S/he will support and document research relating to carbon emissions and agriculture, and will help steward IC land. S/he will also support organization-wide fundraising and development efforts when necessary.

Site of Service: Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont
Member Title or Area of Focus: Local Foods
Description of Service:

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) seeks a Sustainable Environment Entrepreneur (SEE), AmeriCorps member to work on the Vermont Food Education Every Day (VT FEED) program to develop a sustainable business model for processing local foods for both retail and institutional sales, research and promotion of direct marketing programs in Vermont (farmers' market and community supported agriculture) and community outreach. The purpose of the program is to expand agricultural awareness and education by developing a community understanding of agriculture thereby increasing marketing opportunities for farmers.

Site of Service: Rutland Area Farm and Food Link
Member Title or Area of Focus: Local Foods
Description of Service:

Rutland Area Farm and Food Link (RAFFL) is a non-profit working to increase Farm Viability and Food Access in our region of Vermont. We are seeking an AmeriCorps Member to increase knowledge of and access to local foods in the community and in area schools. The member will be involved in program design, promotion and outreach, and direct delivery of services within three primary work areas: Public Outreach and Education; Gleaning and Food Rescue Efforts; and Educational programming in area schools. Ability to work independently, experience with a variety of software programs, good layout skills for creating outreach materials, and knowledge of local food systems are desired skills.

Site of Service: SIT Graduate Institute
Member Title or Area of Focus: Local Foods
Description of Service:

The AmeriCorps Vermont Campus Compact Sustainable Environment Entrepreneur (SEE) member will work with the SIT Farm Steering Committee, the SIT Environmental Working Group and other campus or local community organizations to best utilize the assets of the SIT Graduate Institute and World Learning in order to meet the environmental needs of the greater Brattleboro community and assist in community efforts to become more sustainable, with a specific focus on the local food system. The SEE member will be responsible for utilizing carbon calculators to monitor their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The SEE member is also expected to engage SIT student and Brattleboro community members in educational activities and trainings related to issues of environment, sustainability and leadership skills.

Site of Service: Sterling College Position Filled
Member Title or Area of Focus: Energy & Weatherization
Description of Service:

Sterling College, an environmentally-focused liberal arts college in the rural Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, seeks a creative, outgoing, energetic individual to organize and direct collaborative community projects focused on reducing carbon emissions and educating about carbon sequestration. This individual will partner with the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting outdoor recreation, educating about sustainability, and conserving local lakes and forestlands. Specific projects will range from conducting energy-audits in collaboration with Sterling's Environmental Science classes, to promoting pedestrian and bicycle travel through development of a local trail system, to organizing sustainability talks for the larger Craftsbury community.

Member Title or Area of Focus: Campus Food and Energy Coordinator
Description of Service:

The Campus Energy and Food Project SEE member will coordinate efforts to increase college
student leadership and engagement in community food and energy initiatives. This will be accomplished by organizing three sets of related activities: campus visits, training and workshops, and network discussions. The primary activity will be organizing a series of small-group visits to participating campuses, gathering college staff, faculty and students to document the collective knowledge, activities, experience and lessons learned related to student engagement in local food and energy efficiency efforts. Second, the SEE Member will help coordinate and publicize local food, energy efficiency and weatherization training programs for a wider audience of students and interested others. Third, the SEE Member will convene network meetings and facilitate conversations among members.

Member Title or Area of Focus: Sustainability Outreach Member
Description of Service:

The Center for Sustainable Practices at Vermont Technical College seeks to fill an AmeriCorps position for Sustainability Outreach. The ideal candidate will have a passion for broad-ranging environmental issues with a particular emphasis on green energy and weatherization, a desire to explore and investigate new issues with an open mind, strong writing and communication skills, the ability to take direction and to follow-through independently to achieve agreed-upon goals, computer skills including familiarity with social media, and a work or academic history that includes leadership or policy experience. The position will involve contact with students, college faculty and staff, and local environmental experts. Work requires attention to detail and a team approach to accomplishing endeavors.
