VISTA Positions
Vermont Campus Compact is looking for people to fight poverty as organizers, collaborators, and catalysts for change as AmeriCorps*VISTA members. Each member will serve one year at a participating college or community organization, mobilizing the resources of higher education to serve the needs of the community and effect sustainable change. Working with students, faculty, administration, and local communities and schools, VISTA members will build volunteer capacity and develop programs directed at pulling people out of poverty. The 2011-2012 VISTA program goals are focused on education; all VCC VISTAs will develop programming on campuses and in the community focused on improving college aspirations for K-12 students, with a particular focus area on individuals from low-income populations. The goal of these programs and activities is to increase the belief that college is an option and increase access to higher education.

Champlain College, Magnet Schools Coordinator
Champlain College’s Center for Service and Civic Engagement offers an exciting, challenging VISTA position working as a liaison between the college and Burlington’s education organizations. The VISTA will work with college students to create a student organization focused on education- service initiatives. Many of these initiatives provide Burlington’s elementary students with college mentors that attempt to build emotional capacity through structured lunchtime and recess activities. The VISTA will also work toward creating additional partnerships with Burlington’s middle and high schools, as well as other organizations that provide afterschool programming. While working on specific tasks to expand service-education programs, the VISTA will also function as a member of the Center for Service and Civic Engagement team. As a member of the CSCE team, the VISTA is given a great deal of input into shaping his/her experience over the course of the year. The VISTA is expected to plan, or assist in Center programs, steering, and vision. A year as a VISTA in the Center is sure to be a meaningful experience, filled with opportunities for personal reflection and growth!
Champlain College, Family Engagement Coordinator
Champlain College’s Center for Service and Civic Engagement offers an exciting, challenging VISTA position working as a liaison between the college and Burlington’s Edmunds Elementary and Middle Schools. The VISTA will work with Edmunds’ parent-engagement coordinator and various Champlain departments and offices to build a culture of college expectation for all elementary and middle school students. The VISTA will also work towards creating additional partnerships with organizations that provide afterschool programming for low-income students. While working on specific tasks to create the Champlain-Edmunds partnership, the VISTA will also function as a member of the Center for Service and Civic Engagement team. The VISTA is expected to plan, or assist in Center programs, steering, and vision. A year as a VISTA in the Center is sure to be a meaningful experience, filled with opportunities for personal reflection and growth!

Lyndon State College Upward Bound
At the Lyndon State College Upward Bound program the full time VISTA member will provide support services to Lyndon State College Upward Bound students and the full time staff. These services will provide a blueprint for high school academic advising, college access and college success activities for target school coordinators at our 9 cooperating high schools. The focus of the VISTA member will be to provide support to increase students’ aspirations, facilitate post secondary academic preparation, as well as provide support for transition into a post secondary environment and overall success in college from matriculation to graduation. Additionally, the VISTA member will coordinate volunteer community service opportunities throughout the year, and career exploration work study positions for each student during the summer program. The background preparation for the advising program and the community service portion of Upward Bound will be the VISTA member’s primary focus. The VISTA member will become the “Go To” person for coordinating services to meet the needs of our low income students. This position will include all of the necessary training to ensure continued success for our students long term and short term goals.

Middlebury College, Mentoring and Youth Programs Coordinator
Ready to help kids succeed? The Mentoring and Youth Programs Coordinator will be the point person for child-related volunteer programs at Middlebury College. This VISTA member’s primary responsibilities will include overseeing and coordinating the Community Friends mentoring program, strengthening Community Friends’ branches focused on serving minority populations, supporting and collaborating with DREAM and College for Every Student, and serving as the Alliance for Civic Engagement’s liaison to other campus-based youth programs (e.g. Page 1 Literacy, Sister to Sister, etc.) The VISTA will work closely with both students and community members (parents, teachers, guidance counselors, etc) to improve communications and increase the scope and impact of the different programs. Finally the VISTA will conduct research and compile resources to help the disadvantaged children in the programs succeed in school and gain entrance to college. VISTA Leader (Vermont Campus Compact, Colchester, VT)
The VISTA leader will make both a statewide and tri-state impact as they recruit, support and train other VISTAs throughout their experience and help them fight poverty in their communities. The VISTA Leader will assist VISTA members to mobilize the resources of higher education and develop programming on member campuses and in the community focused on improving college aspirations for K-12 students, with a particular focus area on individuals from low-income populations.
The Team Leader works with VCC staff to provide resources and support for members, plan trainings and conferences, maintains strong communication and networks among the VCC A*VISTA members, and collaborates with other Northern New England Campus Compact VISTA leaders, and works with program development at the VCC office.
With up to 8 sites ranging from urban to rural, the Vermont Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA program offers many exciting opportunities for persons wishing to take a leadership role in a progressive field.
The VISTA Leader is supported by Vermont Campus Compact staff, but needs to be a self-starter and be able to work independently to manage the Vermont Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA team. The VISTA Leader will be responsible for:
Planning and coordinating monthly VISTA trainings/meetings
Working collaboratively with VCC program staff to make programmatic decisions
Providing ongoing support for VISTAs through telephone calls, emails, and site visits
Connecting VISTAs with appropriate resources related to service-learning, community service, poverty, public safety and other pertinent topics
Communicating with VISTA programs in ME and NH to coordinate programs and fulfill grant requirements, such as grant reporting
Leading teambuilding activities to facilitate the cohesion of our team
Recruiting, interviewing, and coordinating placement of VISTA members
VISTA Leader candidates must have one year of prior AmeriCorps VISTA service.
