The Marc vanderHeyden Service to Vermont Award
Award given by the Vermont Campus Compact
Board of Directors to a distinguished individual with ties
to Vermont who through his or her actions, scholarly or
professional work, and/or sustained civic engagement, has influenced,
inspired and motivated others.
2009 Recipient - Bill McKibben, Ripton
Bill
is an American environmentalist and author who frequently writes
about global warming, alternative energy, and the risks associated
with human genetic engineering. Since writing for the New Yorker
and The End of Nature, regarded by many as the first book for
a general audience about climate change, McKibben has written
numerous books and articles, including his 2007 book, Deep Economy:
the Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future. Bill was also
the originator of the Step it Up campaign which on April 14th
2007 motivated thousands of people, totaling 1400 demonstrations
in all fifty states, to demand that Congress cut global warming
emissions 80% by 2050. Following the success of Step It Up, Bill
is helping to lead college-aged students and others throughout
Vermont, across the nation, and around the world to help launch
350.org, a global movement to solve the climate crisis aimed at
reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350
parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the
safe upper limit. As a Scholar-in-Residence at Middlebury College,
Bill continues to be deeply involved with Vermont's colleges and
universities. .
2008 Recipient- Former Governor Phil Hoff, Burlington
Former
Governor Phil Hoff made history in 1962 when he was elected as
Vermont's first democratic governor since 1854. Governor Hoff
was then elected twice more in 1964 and 1966. During his tenure
he was known for his pioneering efforts in the fields of environmental,
development, and social welfare programs. He also founded the
Vermont District Court, Vermont Student Assistance Corporation
and the Judicial Nominating Board. Together with New York Mayor,
John Lindsay, former Governor Hoff created the Vermont - New York
Youth Project which brought minority students from the city together
with Vermont students to do joint summer projects at several Vermont
Colleges. Hoff would later say of his administration, "We
were proceeding on the basis that really there was nothing we
couldn't do, that we could get rid of poverty, that we could move
the state along, that we could provide a prosperous and enjoyable
life for every citizen. It was a very positive time." After
his Governorship and an unsuccessful Senate bid in 1970, Hoff
returned to Vermont politics in 1980 serving three terms as a
state senator. In 1989, he co-founded Hoff Curtis, Pacht, Cassidy,
Frame, Somers, and Katims, P.C. were he continues to practice
today.
