Four Years of BTtoP-What Have We Learned? Overview of Findings
to Date
While there is still much to be derived from the intricate connections
between students' engaged learning, civic development, and mental
health and well-being, aggregate findings from the Bringing Theory
to Practice Demonstration and Intensive Site Program research
over the last several years have provided strong evidence that
the linkages among these critical elements of student success
are connected in salient, and oftentimes powerful, ways. http://www.aacu.org/blast/bttp/2009/august.cfm
"Engaging Young People in Civic Life"
Edited by James Youniss and by Peter Levine. Tough-minded, data-driven,
and unsentimental, This book is full of concrete policy proposals
for schools, municipalities, service programs, and political parties.
It offers all the appropriate scholarly caveats and qualifications.
But at its heart, it is a plea to revive American democracy by
offering all our young people the civic opportunities they want
and so richly deserve. http://www.civicyouth.org/?p=347
Youth Without College Experience Less Likely
to Volunteer
Despite the upward trend in youth volunteering, young adults with
no college experience are half as likely to volunteer as their
collegiate counterparts, according to a new report examining the
relationship between youth volunteering and college experience.
Roughly 43 percent of the 20-to-29-year-old population has not
attended college. The report indicates that 25 percent of young
adults who have attended college volunteered in 2007 while only
11 percent of those with no college experience volunteered.
This gap has remained constant since 2002. http://www.civicyouth.org/?p=350

Law Reforms on Young Voters
CIRCLE Fact Sheet shows that young Americans in the nine states
with Election Day registration laws (EDR) were more
likely to vote than those living in states without EDR after controlling

Serving Safely: A Risk Management Resource for College Service
Programs
From California Campus Compact, written by Joyce and Ikeda. This
publication provides service administrators an informational reference
point for considering risk management and liability issues in
campus service programs. Special attention has been given to developing
a common point of understanding between risk managers, campus
counsel, and service providers, so that effective service policies
and procedures that reduce risk, while not compromising program
objectives, may be developed and embraced. $20 per copy http://www.cacampuscompact.org/cacc_publications/serving_safely.html
